[Ended] Tales of the Abyss: Epic Finish

Early on during the series, I almost threw this anime away because the main character was the biggest douche I've seen, and was really stretching the limit of how much douche-ness I was willing to tolerate. But luckily, the story took a sudden turn, not only it took my attention off the douche-ness of the main guy, it also managed to turn him into somewhat a normal person.

The story has quite a few twists and turns, though it's not too difficult to figure out what kind of curve ball they're throwing at you, it still provides quite some entertainment value. One other thing I really like about this anime is the fact they're willing to kill characters, important characters. In my opinion, all epic stories need to have some important characters that doesn't survive to the end. Otherwise it would be too boring.

Oh one more thing, what is Mieu's purpose in this anime? I though she'd be useful at some point before the story ends, but she never did anything asides from the early events that introduced her to the party.

Drama: 90 (Almost too much)
Comedy: 80 (Not bad for what it had)
Action: 85 (There are some lame fights, but it's not bad overall)
Art/Animation: 80 (Typical fantasy style)
Sound/Music: 80 (I like the theme song)
Character: 85 (Gone a bit overboard on the douche play...)
Plot: 85 (Quite a few nice little twists)
Ending: 80 (Too predictable)

Re-watch value: 50 (story like this doesn't really hold any re-watch value)

Overall (not average): 88 ~ Epic

Recommendation: If you can withstand 7 episodes of almost non-stop douch-ness, the you would find this anime very entertaining. But if douche-ness causes too much stress for you, then don't watch it, because you'll destroy your TV before you get through the first 7 episodes.

Tales of the Abyss: Time to...Die?

Currently finished: Episode 20

In the recent episodes, semi-important people are dropping dead left and right. While most of them are what you would considered unfortunate or unavoidable, some of them just feels it's been set up that way so they can add some more death toll to the story...

Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely no problem with important characters dying in the story. In fact, I like stories that has deaths of major characters because it makes good tragedy material. However, the effect of death of characters aren't always equal. It actually feels so much less satisfactory when the story writer decide to kill off a character just because he/she feels like it. Quality tragedy caused by well constructed plot is great. But cheap death, in my opinion is worse than cheap ways to save a characters' lives.

Tales of the Abyss: Anime of the Month

Currently finished: Episode 13

Fantasy was never my thing. All fantasy animes to me has really just been something to watch alongside with others when I have enough time to burn. But Tales of Abyss is different. This is one fantasy anime that I couldn't wait to see the next episode. So far it has been mostly action and politics, all taking place in a fantasy setting that is being explained along the way. Aside from the early annoyance of the doucheness of the the main character, the story itself has been very interesting. So I'm going to hand it the

December 2008 Anime of the Month

award.

Tales of the Abyss: Sudden Turn

Currently finished: Episode 8

If I knew how quickly things were going to turn, I probably wouldn't have written that previous post ranting about how much of a douche Luke was.

Up till now, I consider this series to be mediocre at best. In episode 8, everything changed. Not only the plot made a sudden turn, it also might potentially cured Luke "the douche". Now this series has become so much more interesting.

I'd like to award it fantasy anime of the month, but, this is the only ongoing fantasy anime at the moment, so there is no point of that.

New rating (out of 5): 4.25 (net gain: +0.25) ~ Nice Twists

Tales of the Abyss: Douche of the Season

Currently finished: Episode 7

Luke was a little douche early on in the series. As time goes by, I thought he had grown out of it. But I was wrong. Recently, he just become the biggest douche of this season.

Aside from that little annoyance, this series is ok. But they ought to cure his "douchness" quick or I may not be able to enjoy this series any more.
