In case you don't know, I have this personal thing against mecha animes. Technically, it has nothing to do with the genre, rather, what 90% of the genre does: your big bad robots beats my big bad robots, but there's this top secret super robot that beats your big bad robots, and this is the story how I get my hands on this super robot. I personally think it is just stupid to base so many stories on this exact concept, and that's why I hardly review any mecha animes (and under no circumstances would any Gundumb anime ever be reviewed in my blog).
However, there are that 10% exceptions. Once a while a mecha anime would come along that did not root it self on those ridiculous robot-war concept, such as Macross Frontier, actually bring some redeeming values into the genre. Soukyuu no Fafner is one of them.
Technically, Fafner would fall under the "Evangelion clone" genre (yes, Eva has its own genre). But even so, I'd consider Fafner the best Eva clone I've ever seen, succeeding on things that past Eva clone such as RahXephon failed.
So, if you haven't already noticed, I love Fafner, short of naming it the second coming of mecha anime Christ. (LOL) So, naturally, when I heard the news that they're making another Fafner movie, I couldn't be more excited. The trailer is available on their official website for steaming http://fafner.jp/h-and-e/top.html Although it looked as it's just a theatrical remake of the original series, I'd be excited just to re-live through the story of Fafner.
On top of that, my favorite J-pop group, angela would be performing their theme song again--good for them to bring back the whole cast together.

Did you enjoy Eureka Seven back in 2005? I felt it was much better than most mech anime and I was surprised I got so into it considering I hate stupid shit like Gundam. The character development was phenomenal in my opinion and it had a great soundtrack to back it up.
Other than that, this anime sounds pretty good. I'll be sure to check it out.
Actually, Eureka Seven is still on my backlog that I'm working hard to clean out. So I would have no reference in comparing those to. But what I could tell you, is that as much as I hate mecha animes, I really really enjoyed Soukyuu no Fafner: Dead Aggressor
I don't know why but i like mecha, but i never watch mecha series for the story( there are some exceptions)
only for the battle, it is my breather from Drama series.
Btw Eureka 7 was a good anime, not a must watch, but i didn't regret it.
as your description of mecha anime, it is a waste of time for me and I wouldn't even enjoy those wasted time, as oppose to animes like ToLoveRu and Arakawa Under the Bridge that even I know it's waste of time, at least I get some enjoyment out of them...
I don't think i have ever watched a mecha anime that i've liked except for one, Code Geass, and i'm not sure if it really can be called a mecha anime. It's more of a psycological action/drama which coicidentally have mechas :P Code Geass is probably my fav anime of all time.
